What you need to know before the election

Here at Equality PA, we are deeply disappointed in our leaders in Harrisburg as the legislative session comes to a close.

In spite of overwhelming support in both chambers of the legislature for nondiscrimination protections and a massive outcry for including LGBT people in hate crimes protections, the state legislature took absolutely NO action to protect LGBT people from discrimination over the past two years.

Legislators will now go home to focus on elections.

I encourage you to focus on your local elections too. Download the voters guide here to find out which leaders will stand up for us in Harrisburg and be sure to vote for them.

Attitudes toward LGBT equality have only been growing stronger in recent years. Polls repeatedly show that a clear majority of voters support marriage equality and nondiscrimination. There are also 34 municipalities in Pennsylvania that passed nondiscrimination ordinances and many more are considering doing the same. And this week, in Philadelphia, the city council took the first step toward passing stronger hate crimes protections for LGBT people.

When the legislature returns in January we will be there to make them understand that LGBT people deserve to live our lives with dignity and respect, and we deserve protections from discrimination and violence. We hope you will be there with us to ensure that our leaders in Harrisburg live up to their promises and take action for LGBT equality.

But before then, we need to be sure to elect the best leaders. Download your voter guide and get your voter information here.
