Thank you Philadelphia City Council for standing up against hate

Statement from Ted Martin, Executive Director of Equality PA thanking the Philadelphia City Council for their recent unanimous vote to include lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in hate crimes protections in the city of Philadelphia:

I would like to personally thank the Philadelphia City Council today for doing what the state could not do—passing legislation to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in hate crimes protections.

Hate crimes are different from other crime. Hate crimes don’t only affect the victims of that crime. Hate crimes affect an entire community.

It’s a shame that such a terrible incidence of violence had to happen to bring us together again to ask to be recognized and protected under the law equally.

We need hate crimes laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression everywhere in Pennsylvania. I am glad to see that the Philadelphia City Council is leading on this issue and standing up against hate.

Now, just days before the statewide election, we look to our leaders in Harrisburg to follow their lead.

With 60,000 members across the commonwealth, Equality Pennsylvania is the leading organization advancing equality and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Pennsylvanians.
