Telling our own stories for #GivingTuesday

An email from our new Development Director, Joe Dungee:

My name is Joe Dungee and I’ve been working behind the scenes (mostly) for Equality Pennsylvania for just over eight years as the Operations Director, but in the coming weeks, I’m going to be stepping out in a new role with the organization: Development Director.

I’m emailing you today to introduce myself AND to ask you to help our fundraising efforts by considering Equality PA as part of your #GivingTuesday plan this year.

Here’s a little bit about me: I was born in Phoenixville, a suburb of Philadelphia, and I’ll be honest – growing up there as a gender nonconforming kid was tough. I experienced a great deal of bullying from peers and adults, sometimes my own family, and it was hard to see the silver lining; a future where I would have a voice that mattered.

There weren’t a whole lot of queer role models back then. There was no Trevor Project or It Gets Better Campaign, but there was ACT UP, the PBS miniseries Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City and then came Ellen DeGeneres. Little by little there were more of us. And then there was hope.

That hope is something I’ve always held firm to and it’s the thing that’s kept, and keeps, me going. Working for Equality PA has given me the opportunity to travel all over the state and despite the hard time I had growing up queer, Pennsylvania will always have a special place in my heart. I was fortunate enough to live in Pittsburgh for a time and it’s like a second home to me – my first gay bar was Pegasus on Liberty Avenue and I’ll always cherish the memories I have of dancing the night away with the first queer friends I ever made.

Like I said, I’ve traveled all over the state as a representative for Equality PA and I have had the honor to meet and work alongside so many incredible people who are helping to push LGBTQ rights in our state forward.

I’m asking you to make your #GivingTuesday plan with Equality PA in mind so that we can keep that momentum going!

Here are five great reasons to include Equality Pennsylvania in your plan for #GivingTuesday:
  1. Because every Pennsylvanian deserves to live their lives in peace and prosperity, including LGBTQ Pennsylvanians.
  2. Because Equality PA is working everyday to advance equality for all LGBTQ Pennsylvanians.
  3. Because your donation makes it possible for Equality PA to continue our important work to end discrimination in employment, housing, health care and business services.
  4. Because you can dedicate your donation to someone you care about as a meaningful holiday gift.
  5. Because your donation will be matched dollar for dollar to a generous donor’s matching gift.
I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months as we work together to advance LGBTQ rights in the place we call home. Click here to give.
Thank you for all that you do!
