PA Legislators Move New Legislation to Secure Nondiscrimination Protections for LGBT Pennsylvanians

Three Bills Introduced in the Senate This Week Propose Updating Human Relations Act to Protect LGBT People from Discrimination In Employment, Housing, and Public Accommodation

Executive Director, Ted Martin, issues open letter to all legislators with personal testimony from Pennsylvanians

Harrisburg – Earlier this week Sen. Pat Browne (R- 16) introduced three new bills that will update the PA Human Relations Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression in discrimination protections in the areas of employment, housing and business and government services.

Ted Martin, Executive Director of Equality PA, responded to the new legislation saying, “For more than a decade we have gathered support for nondiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, and in the past two years we have seen unprecedented support from voters, businesses and people of faith in the Keystone State. That’s why it is exciting to see movement to secure comprehensive nondiscrimination protections now. Each bill represents an important step forward in our fight for equality.”

Martin added, “We have been and continue to support the PA Fairness Act. These bills represent an additional strategy for providing discrimination protections to all LGBT families in Pennsylvania as urgently as possible. We won’t leave any stone unturned in our work to secure nondiscrimination protections in Pennsylvania.”

Martin issued an open letter to all legislators with personal testimony from Pennsylvanians on why nondiscrimination protections are important to them. (Click here for letter.)

Currently there are no federal or state protections from discrimination in employment, housing, or public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

With 60,000 members across the commonwealth, Equality Pennsylvania is the leading organization advancing equality and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Pennsylvanians.
