Organize an event to support transgender students in your town

Thanks for standing up for transgender students.

Every student deserves a fair chance to succeed in school and prepare for their future—including students who are transgender. Every student should be treated fairly and equally under the law, and protecting transgender students helps ensure that they have the same opportunity as their classmates to fully participate in school.

Step-by-step plan to organize an event:

1. Reach out to your local network of organizations, family and friends and ask if anyone wants to help–or if they are already planning something. You can organize a vigil at a house of worship, a protest at a government building, or just a simple “Honk-and-Wave” event where you stand with a group of people at an intersection with signs and speakers.

2. Pick a location and time. Make sure you don’t need a permit or permission to use your location, or if you do, ask how to set that up.

3. Set up an an event on Facebook and invite people. Invite some local media. Email us at and we will share your event on our page.

4. Set up your speakers. Ask some community leaders, community members, and allies to speak on why protecting transgender students in school is important to them. Call on your local school board to make a public statement protecting transgender students. (Click here for a sample statement and background on the issue.)

5. Take pictures of your event and post on the Facebook and other social media!
