Equality PA thanks Gov. Wolf for recognizing the need for nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people in Pennsylvania

Wolf addressed the issue of discrimination today’s budget address, touting the need for Pennsylvania to foster a good climate for businesses and job creation

Harrisburg – Today Gov. Tom Wolf addressed the legislature to outline his priorities for the coming legislative session and in his speech he recognized that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people should be protected from discrimination at work, in housing and public accommodations.

Wolf stated, “The companies and countries that are thriving in today’s global economy are those that are committed to diversity, inclusion, and fairness. All Pennsylvania’s families deserve those same opportunities, no matter what their race, sexual orientation, where they started life, or who they are.”

Ted Martin, Executive Director, of Equality PA thanked Gov. Wolf, saying, “We truly appreciate Governor Wolf recognizing that discrimination protections are needed. Most people in Pennsylvania are shocked to learn that people can still be fired from a job, evicted, or turned away from a business just for being gay or transgender. It’s time to update our laws to make sure that all people in Pennsylvania have the opportunity to earn a living and make a better life for themselves and their families.”

In the last legislative session two bills were introduced in the House and Senate, HB and SB 300, that would update the Human Relations Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in the statues related to discrimination at work, in housing, and public accommodations. The bills had bi-partisan Co-Prime Sponsors in both houses and record numbers of sponsors overall. New bills calling for discrimination protections for LGBT people are expected to be reintroduced in the coming weeks for the current session.
