Equality PA extremely disappointed with anti-trans CHIP bill; Pennsylvania elected officials use bill to discriminate

Equality Pennsylvania expresses our extreme disappointment at those members of the Pennsylvania Senate who voted to pass HB 1388, a bill that should have been a simple reauthorization of the widely supported Children’s Health Insurance Program.  Instead it became a vehicle for elected officials to write discrimination against transgender children into law.

“Today’s action sets a dangerous precedent that members of our Commonwealth’s most disenfranchised and under-represented populations can be openly denied state-related care and services, just by a vote of the legislature,” said Equality Pennsylvania Interim Executive Director John Dawe. “This happened without a hearing… without input from those affected.  Equality Pennsylvania will continue to share the stories of our community, including those who must deal with the consequences of this discriminatory bill.”

In a memo from Governor Tom Wolf, he wrote, “All health decisions for these kids should be made with their parents, guardians, counselors, and doctors – not by politicians.”

We now call on Governor Wolf, members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and our supporters across the Commonwealth to call out and bring attention to this harmful action and do whatever they can to protect the rights of LGBTQ Pennsylvanians now and in the future.
