Equality PA Condemns Racism in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood

Statement from Equality Pennsylvania Executive Director, Ted Martin:

Discrimination comes in many forms and for LGBT people of color it is compounded at the intersections of sexual orientation, gender identity, and race. Recently, while people of color in the community were working to raise awareness about racism they have experienced in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood, a video surfaced of a Gayborhood club owner using racist epithets and making disparaging comments about black patrons. This example proves what patrons were saying, and this racist behavior must end.

Racially generated discrimination not only affects people of color as patrons of Gayborhood businesses.  Studies show that LGBT people of color are more affected by employment and housing discrimination than many other members of our communities.  Discrimination at the intersection of being LGBT and a person of color contributes to higher incidences of poverty in these communities and can bring on devastating effects for generations of families.[1]

Discrimination has real harm and cannot stand. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and equally and to have the opportunity to build lives for themselves and their families.

Equality Pennsylvania works every day to ensure that all people are treated fairly, equally, and with respect. We applaud all efforts to help end discrimination and commend those in our community who work to expose the real harm that it causes.

As a result of the activism around the issues in the Gayborhood, the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission and Office of LGBT Affairs are holding a hearing on racism and discrimination on October 25 at 6PM at Liberty Resources, 112 N. 8th St. Suite 600. We encourage all of our supporters to attend the hearing and speak out against racism and discrimination.
