Equality PA Commends Gov. Corbett for Supporting Non-Discrimination Bill

Bill has Significant Bi-Partisan Support and is up to 93 Co-Sponsors, Including 12 Republicans

Harrisburg – Equality PA, Executive Director, Ted Martin commended Gov. Corbett for his public support of HB 300 today. HB 300 and its Senate counterpart, SB 300, amends the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act by prohibiting discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

Martin on Gov. Corbett’s statement: “Gov. Corbett showed leadership today by supporting HB 300/SB 300, the state’s non-discrimination bill. His support for this bill underscores that people of Pennsylvania understand that while we may not all have the same views and beliefs, we all deserve to be able to earn a living to support ourselves, to support our families, and to contribute to society.  Thank you, Gov. Corbett, for calling out discrimination in all its forms.”

Martin continued, saying, “Discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is real in 2013 and it must be stopped. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that everyone should have equal opportunity and a level playing field. That’s why Equality PA is working to find common ground with the Governor and other leaders in the state to put an end to unfair discrimination.”

HB 300 and its counter part in the Senate, SB 300, have broad bipartisan support among legislators, businesses, and voters. Both bills have bipartisan prime sponsors and the House bill has 93 co-sponsors including 12 Republicans. In a poll commissioned by Equality PA and done by Susquehanna Polling and Research in March of 2013 of both Democratic and Republican voters, respondents supported a non-discrimination bill in Pennsylvania by a margin of 72%. And, in the business community, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, support SB 300/HB 300 along with the state’s largest employer, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as corporate leaders Alcoa and American Eagle.
