ACTION ALERT: HB 1933 is vile attack against LGBTQ Pennsylvanians

On November 20, 2017, Representative Jesse Topper introduced HB 1933, a bill that seeks to deny “coverage for gender or sex reassignment surgery or gender or sex transition services, including, but not limited to, physician’s services, inpatient and outpatient hospital services, prescribed drugs or counseling services related to such surgery or services.”

If this bill passes, the Commonwealth will be forced to seek exceptions to federal nondiscrimination laws and would be exposed to federal legal action on behalf of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. In short, Representative Topper, the bill’s sponsors, and supporters, by way of ‘yea’ vote, are endorsing Pennsylvania’s application for a ‘License to Discriminate.’

The Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the American Psychological Association agree that discriminatory bills like this are not only an attack on basic healthcare rights, but undeniably contribute to a broader attack on the LGBTQ community. Healthcare decisions should be made by doctors, parents, and patients – not Harrisburg politicians serving their own interests.

“HB 1933 (2017) sends a very clear message to all Americans: Pennsylvania is NOT a welcoming place to live, raise a family, or do business,” said John Dawe, interim executive director at Equality PA. “This sets a dangerous precedent. A vote in favor of this legislation is a vote in favor of discrimination of any kind.”

“We call on members of the House to oppose this attempt to write discrimination into law and to actively speak out against it at every opportunity. No one who votes to advance this legislation can call themselves a friend to the LGBTQ community or a supporter of an equal, equitable, and fair Pennsylvania,” Dawe added.
