Unprecedented Coalition Issues Anti-Endorsement of Democratic Lt. Governor Candidate, Mark Critz

Equality, women’s health, and environmental advocates release joint mailer to educate voters about Critz’s dismal voting record

Philadelphia – Today Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania PAC, PennEnvironment, and Equality PA joined in issuing an “anti-endorsement” of Democratic Lt. Governor candidate, Mark Critz. While most of the candidates in Tuesday’s Democratic primary race for Lt. Governor hold positions consistent with the party’s electorate, Mark Critz’s voting record is so far out of step that these diverse groups came together to inform voters before the May 20th Primary Election.

The groups recently launched a campaign to alert Democratic voters to Mark Critz’s dismal voting record on key issues in the commonwealth, including a multi-issue mailing which can be viewed here:

The mailer was sent to 25,000 democrats in Western PA and the coalition will use a variety of communication strategies to inform tens of thousands of Democratic voters around the state about the reality of Critz’s record.

On a conference call for statewide media outlets today, the spokes people for each group detailed why they are telling voters not to vote for Critz.

“Democratic voters need to know that Mark Critz’s voting record clearly shows that he does not support the majority of Pennsylvania voters on the environment,” said David Masur, Executive Director of PennEnvironment. “Clean air and clean water is supported by Pennsylvanians from every corner of the state and all political affiliations—yet while in Congress, Mark Critz consistently voted to increase pollution, threatening our environment and health.”

“In a state where over two-thirds of all voters – including a majority of Democrats, a majority of Republicans and a majority of independents – support family planning funding to Planned Parenthood, Mark Critz stands apart in his vote to defund family planning programs while in Congress,” said Sari Stevens, Executive Director for Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania PAC.  “And equally as unfathomable is Critz’s vote against the Violence Against Women Act in 2012. The VAWA Act is a measure that provides crucial funding for sexual assault and elder abuse programs among many other important measures to protect victims of rape and domestic abuse.”

“Critz does not deserve to be first in line to the Governor’s mansion. His positions on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality are in line with those of the most extreme conservatives in the state,” said Ted Martin, Executive Director, Equality PA. “Pennsylvania primary voters need to know the reality of Critz’s record.”
