Thanks for all you do

It’s been quite a year. I don’t need to remind you that we won what might be considered the most significant step forward for LGBT rights in the state this past May when Judge Jones issued the decision that granted everyone the freedom to marry in Pennsylvania.

Though I was always hopeful, I wasn’t sure that I would see the day that we win marriage equality so soon. And now that it’s here, I can’t help but turn to all of the other important ways that LGBT people are still discriminated against in Pennsylvania. That’s why Equality PA continues to work on many more fronts to end discrimination and unfair treatment. We are planning to work hard in the coming year:

  • to end discrimination at work, in housing, and public accommodation;
  • to make sure sexual orientation and gender identity are included in hate crimes protections;
  • to make sure all people –especially transgender people– have access to the health care they need;
  • to make sure schools are safe for LGBT kids;
  • to increase funding for preventing the spread of HIV and for HIV treatment;
  • and to address many more issues.

We have already come so far, and we have accomplished a lot this year to help us meet all of those goals. In this year alone, we added 5 organizers around the state to work with the LGBT community and allies and make sure their voices are heard on these important issues. We have signed on over 400 small businesses and 400 faith leaders that support LGBT equality. We worked with nine Fortune 500 companies to help them support nondiscrimination. And we are working to help the LGBT caucus in the state legislature develop their priorities for the year.

I am grateful to our previous board president, Adanjesus Marin, whose leadership helped advance equality in PA. After four years of service, Mr. Marin has been elected to be Co-President of Pennsylvania Pride at Work and resigned from our board. We wish him well in his new role. In addition to my current presidency of the advocacy arm of Equality PA, I will take on a new role as the interim president of the educational foundation board in the coming year to fill this vacancy.  I am looking forward to continuing the great work of Equality PA.

Because of you and your support, we are poised to win significant victories for LGBT people in Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a moment at the end of this year to thank you for your support. I look forward to making even more progress with you in 2015.
