Thank you, Gov. Wolf for keeping us moving forward

Today Gov. Tom Wolf gave the annual budget address, and Equality PA wanted to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Gov. Wolf for all he has done and continues to do for the LGBT community in Pennsylvania. He is a true champion for equality.

During his time as Governor he has helped to increase discrimination protections for LGBT people at work by extending those protections to state workers and workers who are under state contract. He ensured that health insurance companies cannot discriminate against transgender people, and he helped to simplify the process to change gender markers on birth certificates. And we know that he will continue to work for statewide nondiscrimination protections.

In his address, Gov. Wolf stated that he will work with Republicans in the legislature to make progress. We know that there are leaders on both sides of the aisle who understand that ending discrimination for LGBT people is good for the commonwealth. We look forward to supporting Gov. Wolf in his efforts to push forward that progress.

Unfortunately, however, this week right-wing extremists in the legislature have proposed legislation to block women from making the best choice for their own health care regardless of risk to the mother, and to block state funds to 19 municipalities in Pennsylvania that provide sanctuary to immigrants, some of whom are fleeing persecution for being LGBT.

The good news is in response to those proposals, Gov. Wolf came out strongly in support of immigrants and women. We know that he will continue to be a champion for all Pennsylvanians and will not allow us to go backwards.

There are good guys out there, like Gov. Wolf–and we thank him for consistently doing the right thing.
