Equality Pennsylvania Partners with ACLU of Pennsylvania to Win the Freedom to Marry for Gay Couples

Today, the ACLU of Pennsylvania filed Whitewood v. Corbett, a legal complaint challenging the constitutionality of the commonwealth’s law excluding gay couples from marriage.

Equality Pennsylvania, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Pennsylvanians, is partnering with the ACLU in the campaign to win the freedom to marry for all families in the Keystone State.

“All loving couples should be able to share in the freedom to marry,” said Ted Martin, executive director of Equality Pennsylvania. “This lawsuit is a critical step toward ending marriage discrimination against committed gay couples in the commonwealth. We’re honored to be working with our friends at the ACLU on this important case, and we look forward to educating the community about why marriage matters to all Pennsylvania families.”

This historic case to win marriage for gay couples is one effort among many to advance equality in Pennsylvania. Equality Pennsylvania is working to ensure that LGBT people have the freedom, respect, and dignity they deserve in all aspects of life.

“Equality Pennsylvania is committed to advancing fairness and freedom on all fronts – from the courtroom to City Hall to the Capitol. While securing marriage for all loving couples is a top priority, our first goal is still passing a statewide law to protect LGBT people from discrimination,” said Martin.

Right now, it’s legal in Pennsylvania to fire someone, deny them a mortgage, or refuse them a hotel room because they are gay or transgender. Legislation that would make such discrimination illegal will be considered this year by State House and State Senate, and the bills have already garnered the support of more than 100 co-sponsors.

“No one should have to worry about losing their job, their home, or their security simply because of who they are or who they love,” said Martin. “At Equality Pennsylvania, our foremost priority is to protect LGBT people from the discrimination that we know is far too common in our communities. Everyone deserves equal protection under the law.”
