Equality PA Praises U.S. Attorney General for Increasing Protections to Married Same-Sex Couples
Many Pennsylvanians will benefit from protections, but freedom to marry for all couples is still needed in PA for fully equal protection under the law
Harrisburg – Equality PA, Executive Director, Ted Martin praised Attorney General Eric Holder for increasing protections for married same-sex couples.
Ted Martin said, “For committed couples all over the commonwealth this announcement will come as welcome news. Now all legally married couples will receive the same protections as any other married couple under federal law in these important areas. However, until all committed couples in PA have the same freedom to marry, we will not have equal protection under the law–and that is what all Pennsylvanians deserve.”
On Saturday, February 8, 2014, the U.S. Attorney General applied the landmark Supreme Court ruling to the Justice Department and announced that same-sex spouses cannot be compelled to testify against each other, will be eligible to file for bankruptcy jointly, and will be entitled to the same rights and privileges as federal prison inmates who are married.
