Equality PA Opposes So-Called Paycheck Protection Act

Bills HB 1507 & SB 1034 Would Threaten Protections for LGBT People in Current Union Contracts

Harrisburg – Equality PA, Executive Director, Ted Martin spoke out against the Paycheck Protection Act (HB 1507 & SB 1034) today citing the potential loss of protections for LGBT state workers that exist in current union contracts.

Ted Martin explained, “Unions were among the first large employee groups to provide protection from workplace discrimination for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The so-called Paycheck Protection act does not protect state workers, but instead could have sweeping consequences for unions themselves. Those consequences could include loss of anti-discrimination protections for LGBT state workers.”

The Paycheck Protection act claims to be about deducting union dues, but analysis of the bill shows that it is more likely to silence working families and weaken unions. Under current law, no one can be forced to join a union in Pennsylvania. No member of a union can be forced to contribute to political campaigns. And, no public employer can be forced to deduct dues.

Thousands of Pennsylvanians are gathering in the Capitol Rotunda today to protest HB 1507 and SB 1034.

With 60,000 members across the commonwealth, Equality Pennsylvania is the leading organization advancing equality and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Pennsylvanians.
