Equality PA honors Gloria Casarez and mourns her passing

Ted Martin, Executive Director of Equality PA made this statement today on the loss of activist, leader, champion, and friend, Gloria Casarez:

“Gloria was a very accomplished woman who made a real difference to people who needed it. What I will remember most about her is her decency and willingness to help anyone who needed help regardless of her own situation. She was always available and accessible to all who reached out to her. Her heart was in all of her work from the smallest task to incredibly ambitious campaigns. She will never be replaced, but her work and her spirit will live on in everything she achieved. She will be sorely missed.”

Gloria Casarez passed away on October 19, 2014. She served as the director of the Mayor’s Office of  lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) affairs since 2008. She also led the Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative as Executive Director in Philadelphia for ten years beginning in 1999. During her career she achieved many victories for the LGBT community including helping to make Philadelphia one of the most welcoming cities in America for LGBT people. Gloria will leave behind many friends and family including her wife Tricia Dressel.

With 60,000 members across the commonwealth, Equality Pennsylvania is the leading organization advancing equality and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Pennsylvanians.
