Communications Assistant/Story Organizer

Founded in 1996 as the Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights, Equality Pennsylvania is the only organization in the Commonwealth advocating in Harrisburg and across the state, exclusively for the rights of LGBT Pennsylvanians.

Our central goal is to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pennsylvanians through education, policy and legislation.  More than a decade ago, Equality Pennsylvania was a volunteer-based 501 (c) 3 organization.  Today, we have full-time and part-time staff, more than a dozen interns each year and many, many dedicated volunteers.

In 2010 we totally re-organized and strengthened our status as an organization by adding both a 501(c) 4 organization and a PAC to our overall structure.  Since then we have made a number of key administrative changes and today our Board comes from areas all across Pennsylvania. We are gay and straight, business people and government workers, attorneys, non-profit leaders and professors who are singularly focused on changing the landscape for all LGBT Pennsylvanians.

This year Equality PA will be working to build momentum to educate the public about the fact that it is still legal in Pennsylvania to be fired from your job, evicted from your home, or turned away from a business just for being gay or transgender. Unfortunately, many people in Pennsylvania don’t realize that the LGBT community does not have discrimination protections. If we want to pass nondiscrimination protections, we need to make sure that the supportive public is educated about it. That’s why we are hiring communications support to make sure that the stories of discrimination are being told all around the state.

The Communications Assistant/Story Organizer will work under the supervision of the Communications Director to work with supporters to identify, develop and promote stories.

Specifically, the Communications Assistant/Story Organizer will:

  • Assist in the implementation of the communications strategy for Equality PA
  • Work with Equality PA volunteers and supporters to help them tell their stories
  • Identify and engage new supporters and volunteers for Equality PA
  • Help to develop graphics and content for the Equality PA web site and social media sites
  • Work with organizers to train them on interviewing techniques for stories

We seek an enthusiastic self-starter with high energy, a “can do” attitude, and a knowledge of and commitment to social justice. They must be independent and easily adapt to a fast-paced environment.  This person must be flexible, adaptable, resourceful and creative.

This person will be capable of taking responsibility for specific goals and measurable outcomes within designated time frames and will be able to coordinate multi-task initiatives to successful conclusion.

The successful candidate will have organizing experience, writing skill, knowledge of how to use social media, and high comfort with online tools for web editing like WordPress. Graphic design ability or knowledge of HTML is definitely a plus.

The successful candidate will have exceptional “people skills” that will be used to work effectively with colleagues, partner organizations, and volunteers.  Candidates will have the ability to recruit and mobilize volunteers.

This is an entry level position where we are looking for candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice and have some volunteer or other activities that show some level of experience with social justice work.

Candidates will also have the ability to maintain flexible work hours including weekends and evening hours and travel in-state 5 – 10 days/month.
