City Council of Pittsburgh Calls on State House to Pass Nondiscrimination Protections for LGBT People
Harrisburg – Today the City Council of Pittsburgh passed a proclamation calling on the Pennsylvania State Legislature to update the state’s laws to protect all people from discrimination including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
Equality PA Executive Director, Ted Martin, reacted by saying, “Most people are surprised to learn that it is still legal in Pennsylvania to be fired from your job, evicted from your home, or turned away from a business just because of who you are or who you love. That’s why I would like to sincerely thank the City Council of Pittsburgh for raising awareness on this critical issue. The leadership that Council President Bruce Kraus and Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak have shown on these issues has been important to LGBT equality in Pittsburgh and statewide.”
The proclamation was sponsored by Council President Bruce Kraus and Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak and was co-sponsored by Council Members Darlene Harris, Rev. Ricky Burgess, Daniel LaVelle, Corey O’Connor, Daniel Gilman, and Theresa Kail-Smith. The proclamation passed unanimously and will be sent to every state legislator in Pennsylvania.
