ACTION ALERTS: Week of July 16, 2018

There are five things happening this week that are important and timely. Please participate where you’re able to.  Items #1 and #5 can be done from anywhere.

1. Congress is considering an amendment that would make it legal to foster care and adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ families.  Click here to send a message to your elected officials telling them to oppose such a measure.

2. Join Equality PA Board Treasurer Kira Kinsman, HRC Rising State Director Allison VanKuiken, and HRC National Press Secretary Sarah McBride Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg or Thursday at 6 p.m. at UFCW 1776 in Pittston Township/NEPA for a discussion, meet and greet, and update on what’s happening in the battleground state of PA. More information here.

3. If you’re in West/Northwest PA, join our friends at Pennsylvania Youth Congress as they provide support for the Lakeview School Administration in Mercer County Tuesday Night.  Administrators have come under attack from anti-transgender community members because of the administration’s pro-equality stance.  More information below and at this link.

4. If you’re in the Lehigh Valley, join our friends from the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Center as they head to the Bethlehem City Council meeting tonight at 7 p.m. and bear witness as council votes to (hopefully) enact the Commonwealth’s 7th municipal ban on the discredited and dangerous practice of so-called “conversion therapy” at Bethlehem City Hall.  Learn more at this link.

5. Equality Pennsylvania is working to lock in voters who plan on going to the polls in November and voting for Pro-LGBTQ candidates!  If you’re one of then, please be sure to check in over at TurnOut PA.

UPDATE on Lakeview School District

Lakeview School District has come out in support of transgender youth. The superintendent has stood up and said that he will protect transgender youth in his district.

This has caused an uproar with hundreds of the constituents. They have shown up to protest in masses. They are using religion to attack the school, superintendent, and transgender youth. Some of the words that have been used to describe transgender youth are sinners, perverts, and sexual deviants.

And then on Saturday, they placed this ad in the local circular:

We encourage local supporters of trans inclusion to attend a community education session by the Lakeview School District administration at Lakeview High School, Tomorrow Night (Tuesday, 7/17) at 6:30 p.m.

Our friends at Pennsylvania Youth Congress have have been on the ground supporting trans inclusion at the school for several months.   Please click here to RSVP.

They are feeding off of fear and fanning hatred.  Please show up with an attitude of love and support!

Best regards,

John Dawe, MNA, CNP, CFRE
