A Historic Victory: Senate Committee Approves Federal Employment Nondiscrimination Act

Wednesday was a historic day nationwide as the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in a 15 to 7 vote. ENDA is a federal bill that would ban employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity — in the same way that the federal government protects workers on the basis of sex or race.

ENDA won overwhelming bipartisan approval from the committee. And to make the moment even more historic, this vote marks the first time a transgender-inclusive nondiscrimination bill has ever advanced in Congress!

At Equality Pennsylvania, we’re celebrating and applauding Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. who voted yes on this bill! We are grateful for his courage and leadership as a representative of the state of Pennsylvania in Congress. As a sponsor of ENDA, he’s committed to making sure the bill becomes law — so that LGBT workers are free from discrimination.

Join us in voicing our appreciation to Senator Casey for his support and sponsorship of ENDA. Call his office now to say thanks: (202) 224 – 6324!

While several states protect LGBT employees, Pennsylvania does not. As ENDA advances in Congress, our own state legislature will soon consider a state law to protect LGBT people from discrimination at work and in our communities.

Every other state in the Northeast has protected LGBT workers — but Pennsylvania is lagging behind its neighbors. In Pennsylvania and the 32 other states that do not explicitly ban discrimination against LGBT people, workers can be denied a promotion or harassed solely based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

It’s time Congress and our state legislature acts to treat all people equally and fairly under our laws.

ENDA’s passage out of the HELP committee is a truly historic step forward for this critical legislation, but we must continue this fight against discrimination nationwide and right here in the commonwealth.
